Central heating was working fine.I woz surprised because. Well because as you can see the pressure was Zero.

Well it it not as bad it looks. I can explain. It was confirmed that the pressure is fine but the pressure gauge is stuck on zero. Okey good looking.

Hi all-what a brill forum! Finally moved from lurking to posting!! I recently bought my first property-3 bed terrace-v exciting. I've been doing a lot of the work on it myself Sarah Beeny style but had to call a heating engineer out last week to look at my boiler-a Wickes 102 combi (Halstead) because it stopped making hot water but heating was working.

The engineer had a really good look at it and said it was probably the diverter valve/diaphragm. He changed that and it did make hot water for a few minutes but then stopped again. Now heating and hot water not working.:( He is recommending I replace boiler as he says it is probably PCB which is expensive esp for Halstead.

I just wanted to check with you guys as I've lurked some fab advice from here before. I don't think he is trying to rip me off but am a bit annoyed that I will have to pay for the first part and fitting and now this. Thanks in advance!! Repairs to Halsteads are v expensive unfortunately, but even replacing a pcb (if it is really necessary) would still be a lot cheaper than a new boiler Low voltage wiring harness is very prone to having wires break in it. I would get him to test this out first. If the hot water only worked for a short while I would say he hasn't fixed anything and hasn't a clue what is actually wrong with it, hence trying to sell you a new boiler.

If it truly was the diaphragm, then this would have been a permanent repair. Worth double checking from my experience:- My Son's boiler packed up, his house maintenance insurance sent a Techy, he said it was the pcb and expensive might be better to consider new boiler date during the last very cold spell, Son could not wait ( two babies in house) for the part approval and bought pcb, he called me after this did not work, went over, had a look at old pcb-glass fuse was blown-checked around and found only the fan could do this-checked fan and found tight-Son bought new fan-installed all good-insurance part never arrived! Re the last post, replacing the fan should not be considered as a DIY job as it involves desturbing the integrity of the combustion chamber.

Your repairer obviously has no ability to diagnose and repair boiler faults. It is very likely to be a PCB fault though. These are expensive at about £150 but always cheaper than a new boiler. The pcb is very prone to bad solder joints and I usually manage to repair them by resoldering. Normally I only fit new parts but on that model the price is so high for a poorly made component so the customer saves.
