Sorry for the cut and paste, but I didn't really feel like retyping the whole message. I just purchased a 6.5mm Itialian Carcano last weekend and was wondering more about its history. I have read up on the internet more about it but I am having trouble finding one that looks like mine. The closet I can find is one that is for sale here.

The link is However mine has a few differences. I am lacking the sling piece on the very butt end of the rifle. The markings are there for one but it looks like it was never added. Also I have a very weird looking safety behind the trigger. The markings on it are RE Terni with the crown symbol. Also the serial number on the barrel is V2214 and matches the stock. Also there is a year engraved on the barrel of 1939 with roman numerals XVIII after it.

The two main differences are shown in these photo's Thanks. The pic shown from the auction is a cavalry carbine lacking the bayonet and mounting assembly. Your pic does not show quite enough to tell if it's also that model. The rear sling bar recess appears to have been filled but you would be better able to tell that. Filling the recess used to be fairly common to make the carbine look 'more sporty'. If you wouldn't mind posting a couple more overall pics and maybe another of the rear sling bar recess, someone here can quickly tell you. I'm not sure about the apparent 'safety'.

If it was a fill in on the sling attachment it was done very very well. If you run your finger over it, it is completely smooth.

Almost looks like it was drawn on there but it does not bleed if you rub you finger on it. Also the original site has been removed and who ever had it before attempted to add something different. I'm not sure if that shows in the photo's or not. If the safety is a custom add'on then it was done very well. I would have never known that it was added on. Okay - it's not a cav carbine, it's a sporterized M91/38 ( if actually a 6.5 and not a 7.35) The front sight looks like a Finn replacement, but it could be a scratch build.

What looks interesting is the added device on the left side. A scope mount?

The trigger block does appear well done. Perhaps a genuine gunsmith altered this to be a nice hunting rifle. If the same person filled the rear sling bar recess, that would account for the fine work. While sporterized, the work appears of good quality.

I thought if it were sporterized that there would be no serial number on the stock. Appeartly i was wrong. It is a 6.5 as that is marked on the barrel.

Also for $75, i don't think it was that bad of a deal. Again thanks, Edit: Also the fill in job looks very well done, Like I said, you can run your finger over it and it is very smooth, well done if so. Also I was looking closer and there is a SD engraved on the Bolt in two places and near the trigger, Very small so thats why I missed it the first time. Any suggestions?
