I am not sure if I am the unlucky one, but APT has killed my camera. It is not safe to use at all, and it is thousand pounds of modified Cool DSLR I downloaded the software and plugged my Camera last month like what I did on Backyard Eos. In the beginning it was fine, but after several mins, the software could not find my camera anymore. I suspected might be because of loose capable, turned on the camera and reconnected several times, then the camera shown deadly error 70. I tried whatever ways mentioned on internet, it didn't work.

It is a modified DSLR, I could not go back to Canon and ask them to fix it. Finally I sent back to another country thousand miles away where I bought, they said the software damaged the USB plug, you could neither avoid using computer or change the mainboard, and of course the cost of the mainboard is just like buying another camera. It is not so often they said, but it happened to me!

Give you up on this, luckily I didn't not plug my cooled CCD on the computer! So please check your software carefully before you release.

Hello, I'm sorry to hear that you have such troubles! In short - APT did not break your camera. It is circumstantial that happened while you were using APT, but effect would be the same with any other application if you had used it in that exact moment. Here is the long explanation. There is only one communication library (SDK) that is provided by Canon which is used by all Windows and Mac applications including Canon's EOS utility. This SDK works with the USB drivers and the direct control on the USB port is not accessible to applications.

APT (BYE, EOS utility, SGP and etc.) can send commands to the SDK like 'make connection', 'set ISO', 'make exposure', 'download image' and so on. The actual communication is hidden in the SDK and USB driver.

APT is not sending directly electricity signals to the USB port. Your statement is the same like to blame Windows that fried a mouse while it is using the mouse driver provided by the manufacturer! APT is developed for 7 years, it is used in real-life for almost 6 years by thousands of cameras from 5 generations!

There were handful of reported issues and most of them were tracked-down to be related to hardware problems (mainly bad production batches of 60D and 60Da). Modification is risky operation and there is no 100% guarantee that it will be successful.

Also there is no guarantee that the sample would not give problem even without modification - this is the reason Canon to provide guarantee. I don't know who made your modification, but definitely his statement that software can be the reason for this problem is either attempt to blame somebody else for his bad work or misunderstanding of the technology!

Above is my opinion as software developer of APT based on my knowledge and experience (more than 25 years in programming). Here is my opinion as amateur. Few years ago with friend of mine made cooling modification of 1000D. Believe me there are a lot of things that can go wrong even if you have made this many times. There are a lot of fragile elements that have to be dismounted and mounted again. Also there is need to place the cooling element very carefully. To take care to avoid condensation and so on.

The most critical place is the left side of the camera where are the connectors. If they are close to the cooling path it is possible to cause condensation in the connector that to lead to short circuit when USB cable is connected. What if the cable you used was exposed to high humidity before you connect it to the camera? What if the computer was exposed to high humidity itself and the USB port was wet?

What if the power source of the camera was unstable or faulty? What if the there is electricity leakage through the USB port caused by different power sources of the computer and the camera? There are so many possibilities that give more logical explanations. Thanks for your reply I have tried whatever i could find on the internet there are softwares on usb connection could cause error 70 Try to be reasonable i dont think what they claimed is correct it can damage the usb but it could be too difficult to identify the problem changing the mainboard is easier and faster way out Anyway, regardless right or wrong it is broken for unknown reasons it could be canons fault could be somebodys fault Hope somebody some day can find out the root reason reason.

If there is a risk, suggest the right setup, you know you cannot avoid using it outdoor with humid weather.

After trying and testing numerous software packages BYE (Backyard EOS) has worked out to be a 5 star performer for me.

After many years of wanting to get back into astronomy and astrophotography I finally recently made the plunge and bought a new Celestron CGEM 1100 Edge HD system with all the bells and whistles less any decent camera systems. Those will have to come later after I have had time to learn a lot more about CCD imaging. But, for now, finding a software package that would work with my old Canon EOS Rebel XT (350D) was the priority and a bit of a challenge. With some help from Doug at Shoestring Astronomy and his DSUSB adapter I am set now. So far Backyard EOS has tested out excellent and the results have me in awe that I could get that much out of my old camera.

Hopefully this will give me plenty of time to work into the CCD imaging era with out quite so much up front cost. Excellent Job!! Keep up the great work.
